Public relations is different from media relations in that info isn't just released or available to writers, but the general public overall. Some corporations forgo media relations totally in favor of the wider public relations approach. This is a call totally up to the company or organization. A business or company might have just one individual working a media relations job, or they may hire outside help from one of many firms in existence.

Folk working in the field may work for media relations firm, as one part of a company or as an independent or independent contractor. Media relations firms employ many highly trained people. Step 1 toward building effective media relation is to build a plan. This plan enumerates the relationships required in building a relationship with local, regional and nationwide reports outlets. The plan also involves how this could be done, the image the organization means to portray, and other notable events that can tie into the firm's goals.

Media relations can involve the writing and distribution of promotional releases. These executives must handle members of local media affiliations and hold press meetings. A media relations dept might work closely with an advertising dept or agency to maximize the potential result of a release, or to find the right target market for a company's press releases.

A media relations policy is sometimes decided by the most senior members of an organization as well as the media relations team. The policy doesn't just affect those at the very top of the company food chain. Instead, a media policy might need workers or members of a group to communicate with management before chatting to members of the media about company issues or events.
